Động từ phải hòa hợp với chủ ngữ về số. Chủ ngữ số ít đi với động từ số ít, chủ ngữ số nhiều đi với động từ số nhiều. Về cách tạo số nhiều, xem Singular And Plural. Cụm từ chen giữa chủ ngữ và động từ không làm đổi hòa hợp, nên phải tìm chủ ngữ thật. Phần lớn lỗi nằm ở những chủ ngữ khó. Nhóm đầu là đại từ bất định như each, every, everyone, either, neither. Nhóm sau là danh từ tập hợp như family, team, government, cùng các cụm số lượng như a number of hay the number of. Quy tắc gần nhất áp dụng cho or, either ... or, neither ... nor, not only ... but also.
Quy tắc cơ bản
- He works hard. · They work hard.
- Cụm từ chen giữa không đổi hòa hợp — tìm chủ ngữ thật: The quality of the products is good. (không phải "are")
Trường hợp động từ số ít
- Đại từ bất định: each, every, everyone, everybody, everything, someone, somebody, anyone, anybody, nobody, no one, either, neither, one, much, little.
- Everybody is here. (Mọi người đều có mặt.)
- Neither answer is correct.
- each/every + danh từ: Each student has a locker. · Every boy and girl was present.
- a number of... → số nhiều, nhưng the number of... → số ít:
- A number of students were absent. · The number of students is forty.
- Chủ ngữ nhìn như số nhiều nhưng là số ít: news, physics, mathematics, economics, measles; tên sách/phim; khoản thời gian/tiền/khoảng cách tính như một đơn vị.
- The news is bad. · Ten years is a long time. · Five thousand dollars is too much.
- Danh động từ, mệnh đề, mệnh đề danh từ làm chủ ngữ: Swimming is fun. · What he said is true.
- There + be: hòa hợp với danh từ đứng sau: There is a book on the table. · There are two books on the table. — xem There Be And It.
Trường hợp động từ số nhiều
- Both ... and: Both Tom and Mary are students.
- Danh từ đôi luôn số nhiều: scissors, trousers, glasses, jeans — My glasses are new. (nhưng a pair of glasses is new).
- People/police/cattle luôn số nhiều: The police are investigating.
Quy tắc gần nhất — Động từ hòa hợp chủ ngữ gần hơn
Với or, either ... or, neither ... nor, not only ... but also, động từ hòa hợp với chủ ngữ gần nó nhất:
- Either the teacher or the students are wrong.
- Neither the students nor the teacher is wrong.
Danh từ tập hợp
Family, team, group, class, committee, audience, government —
- Số ít khi nhóm hành động như một khối: The team is winning.
- Số nhiều khi các thành viên hành động riêng lẻ: The team are arguing among themselves.
Các mẫu đặc biệt
- one of + danh từ số nhiều + động từ số ít: One of my friends is a doctor.
- one of + danh từ số nhiều + who/that + động từ số nhiều (mệnh đề quan hệ tả cả nhóm): She is one of the students who are always late.
- the only one of + danh từ số nhiều + who/that + động từ số ít: He is the only one of the students who is never late.
- Phân số/phần trăm: hòa hợp với danh từ sau "of": Half of the cake is gone. · Half of the students are absent. · Fifty percent of the work is done.
- all/most/some + of: cùng quy tắc — Most of the money is spent. · Most of the tickets were sold.
- many a + danh từ số ít: trang trọng, động từ số ít: Many a student has failed this test.
- more than one + danh từ số ít: More than one person was hurt.
