Collocation là cụm từ kết hợp tự nhiên — "make a decision", không phải "do a decision". Collocation phần lớn là quy ước tùy ý, phải học nguyên cụm; chúng là khác biệt giữa tiếng Anh đúng và tiếng Anh tự nhiên.
Cặp động từ với danh từ là bẫy hay gặp, nhất là make và do. Make tạo ra kết quả, do là làm một việc, nên nói make a decision nhưng do homework. Heavy đi với rain, strong đi với coffee, không nói powerful coffee. Đề cloze chấm bằng cụm, nên ghi cả cụm như commit a crime. OZDIC giúp khi câu dịch đúng mà nghe lạ.

Ghi chú
- Khi một cụm "dịch đúng" mà nghe sai, thường là vấn đề collocation — tra từ điển collocation (vd. OZDIC).
- Học từ vựng theo cụm: ghi "commit a crime" chứ không chỉ "commit".
