FANBOYS nối hai vế ngang hàng, như and, but và so. Cặp tương quan như both và and. Liên từ phụ thuộc mở mệnh đề về thời gian, nguyên nhân hoặc điều kiện. However và therefore nối hai câu độc lập và cần dấu chấm hoặc chấm phẩy.

Nối hai thành phần ngang hàng (từ, cụm từ, hoặc hai mệnh đề độc lập): for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.

- both ... and: Both John and Mary came.
- either ... or: Either you apologize or you leave. (Hoặc bạn xin lỗi, hoặc bạn rời đi.)
- neither ... nor: Neither the teacher nor the students knew. — động từ hòa hợp với chủ ngữ gần hơn.
- not only ... but also: She is not only smart but also kind. — đảo ngữ khi đưa lên đầu: Not only did he win, but he also broke the record — xem Inversion.
- whether ... or: Whether you like it or not, we have to go.
Liên từ phụ thuộc
Mở đầu mệnh đề phụ thuộc, nối vào mệnh đề chính — danh sách đầy đủ theo nghĩa ở Adverbial Clauses.
- Thời gian: when, while, before, after, since, until, as soon as.
- Nguyên nhân: because, since, as, now that.
- Nhượng bộ: although, though, even though, while.
- Điều kiện: if, unless, provided that, as long as — xem Conditional Sentences.
- Mục đích/kết quả: so that, in order that, so ... that, such ... that.
- So sánh: as ... as, than.
Từ nối câu (Conjunctive Adverbs)
Nối các câu/mệnh đề độc lập — cần chấm phẩy hoặc dấu chấm, không chỉ dùng dấu phẩy.

Ghi chú
- Đừng xếp hai từ nối cùng chức năng: "Although it rained, but we went out" là sai — chọn một.
- Quy tắc dấu phẩy: dấu phẩy trước liên từ đẳng lập nối hai mệnh đề độc lập (He was tired, so he slept.); dấu phẩy sau mệnh đề phụ đứng đầu câu (Because it rained, we stayed in.).
